Take Your Daughter to Work

Today (April 27) is Take Your Daughter (or Son) to Work Day! This nationally recognized event is designed to inspire and teach our kids about the value of the work we do every day. Across the country employers in every industry will be welcoming kids to the workplace. Whether you work in an office, at home, or anywhere in between, take advantage of this opportunity to instill in your daughter the importance of “working for the Lord” (Colossians 3:23).

Here are some fun ideas to make the most of Take Your Daughter to Work Day.

Introduce her! This is a great chance to build your daughter up with encouraging words and to teach her the importance of being friendly to others, and of shining a light for Jesus wherever she goes.

“Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones” (Proverbs 16:24).

Bring treats. Spread joy to the entire office (or neighborhood, if you work from home)—in the form of a tray of homemade cookies, muffins or fruit. This is especially fun if your daughter loves to bake or plan parties. Allow her to decorate the tray with menu cards or an “Enjoy!” sign.

“Always be eager to show hospitality” (Romans 12:13b).

Deliver notes. Have your daughter create encouraging notes during the day, then leave them on coworkers’ desks or in their mailboxes. These can include a simple message such as “thank you for working hard!” or feature an inspiring Bible verse, such as:

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit” (Romans 15:13).

Invite her to record the experience in a journal or video. Then work together to create a report for school on what she learned. This will help make the experience more meaningful for both of you.

“Older women are to be… teaching what is good, so that they may encourage the young women…” (Titus 2:3–4).

Plan a lunch date—just the two of you. Set aside this special time of day to get to know your daughter. Ask questions, explore her interests, and discuss her hopes and fears. Perhaps you’ll begin to see each other in a new light.

“Make your ear attentive to wisdom, incline your heart to understanding” (Proverbs 2:2).

Whatever you do, make sure you start the day with a prayer of gratitude to God—for His provision, for the opportunity to use the talents He gave you, and for your daughter, a beautiful gift from God.
